A tensile structure over a swimming pool has to solve problems a regular canopy doesn't — chlorine and humidity exposure, drainage that can't drop water into the pool below, and a full-enclosure vs. partial-shade decision that changes how the pool gets used year-round. This guide goes through all of it, plus how a pool structure compares to a retractable roof or poolside umbrella.

What Is a Tensile Pool Structure
A tensile structure for a swimming pool is designed around your pool's exact shape and the deck area you want covered — not a generic rectangle stretched over whatever's there. Residential and hotel pools are the most common projects, with the structure covering the water body, the surrounding deck and seating, or both, depending on how the pool actually gets used.

Full Enclosure vs. Partial Shade
Full enclosure suits year-round swimming regardless of weather — the structure fully covers the pool, sometimes with glass or fabric side panels, making the pool usable in rain or strong sun alike. Partial shade over part of the pool and deck suits a more recreational use case, where you want some open-sky swimming on good days and shaded coverage over part of the area the rest of the time. Neither is objectively better — it depends entirely on how you actually use the pool.
Chlorine & Humidity Resistance
Chlorine and humidity exposure is a real factor in the fabric-grade decision for pool structures, alongside span and budget — the environment directly above a chlorinated pool is more chemically demanding on the fabric than a typical outdoor canopy sees. We recommend a fabric grade suited to this specific exposure, not a generic outdoor recommendation applied without adjustment.
Drainage Engineering Above the Pool
Drainage matters more here than on almost any other structure we build — pooling water or a slow leak on a fabric roof directly above a swimming pool is a bigger problem than the same issue over a canopy or gazebo, since it drops straight into the water below. This is engineered into the structural form and slope during design, checked specifically for the pool's exact footprint rather than assumed from a standard span calculation.

Choosing a Fabric Grade
PVC or PTFE, chosen partly on chlorine/humidity exposure and partly on the transparency/light level you want over the pool — a more translucent grade keeps the pool feeling bright and open, while a fully opaque grade gives maximum shade. See our tensile structure page for the full fabric-grade breakdown.
Technical Specifications
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Typical Span / Size | 6m–25m, matched to pool and deck dimensions |
| Typical Height / Clearance | 3m–6m |
| Structural Form | Barrel-vault or flat, often retractable |
| Recommended Fabric Grade | PVC or PTFE, humidity/chlorine-resistant |
| Typical Use Cases | Residential and hotel pools |
| Ideal Site Conditions | Pool deck areas with anchor points clear of the water body and existing drainage |
| Foundation / Anchoring | Footings set back from the pool edge/deck, clear of the water body |
What Actually Drives the Cost
Coverage area is the biggest factor — covering just the water body costs less than extending over the full deck and seating area too. Fabric grade and whether the design is retractable are the next-largest factors.

Pool Structure vs. Retractable Roof vs. Umbrella
These three are often used together rather than as alternatives — here's what each one actually does:
| Aspect | Pool Structure | Retractable Roof | Umbrella Structure |
|---|---|---|---|
| What It Covers | The pool water body, fully or partially | Any space, opens/closes on demand | Individual poolside seating spots |
| Fixed or Flexible | Usually fixed (can be built retractable) | Flexible by design — that's the point | Fixed, single-column per unit |
| Primary Purpose | Weather protection for the water body | Choice between open sky and full cover | Shade for a specific seating spot |
| Typical Combination | Base structure over the pool | Retractable version of the pool structure | Added at deck seating, separate from the pool cover |
See our retractable roofs guide if you want the open-sky option built in, or our umbrella structures guide for shading the seating area around the pool.
Our Process, Step by Step
| Step | What Happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Initial Discussion | A call or site visit to understand your pool's shape and how it's actually used. |
| 2. Site Assessment | Pool + deck measurement, anchor-point survey clear of the water body. |
| 3. Design & Fabric Recommendation | Full or partial coverage, and a chlorine/humidity-resistant fabric grade proposed. |
| 4. Quote & Sign-Off | A site-specific quote confirmed before fabrication begins. |
| 5. In-House Fabrication | Cutting, welding, and frame preparation carried out by our own team. |
| 6. Installation | On-site erection and tensioning, engineered drainage confirmed clear of the pool. |
| 7. Handover & After-Sales | Final inspection with you, followed by ongoing maintenance support. |
Maintenance
Periodic cleaning, re-tensioning, and hardware inspection are recommended, same as any tensile fabric structure — chemical/humidity exposure from the pool is worth factoring into inspection frequency, since it's a more demanding environment than a typical outdoor structure sees. See our full maintenance guide for the complete checklist.
