Once you've narrowed down a manufacturer or two, the next real decision point is the quotation document itself — and this is where two quotes that look comparable on the surface can actually be for very different things. This guide is about reading and comparing the paperwork, not about what drives the price (see our cost guide for that) or how to shortlist a vendor in the first place (see our manufacturer selection guide).

What a Genuine Quotation Should Itemize
A quotation you can actually compare against another one should specify — not just imply — a handful of specifics: the fabric grade and, ideally, its GSM/weight; the structure type and span/dimensions; the foundation approach; what's included for on-site installation; and the warranty terms and what they cover. A single lump-sum number without these specified is not something you can meaningfully compare against a second vendor's quote, even if the bottom-line figures look close.

Common Exclusions Worth Asking About
Several items are commonly excluded from a base tensile structure quote and handled separately — site-specific civil work (leveling, drainage), electrical work if lighting is planned, and statutory approvals/permissions where applicable. None of these being excluded is unusual on its own, but a quote that doesn't clarify what's excluded can lead to a higher final cost than the headline number suggested. Asking directly what's excluded is a reasonable, normal question at the quotation stage.
Red Flags When Comparing Quotes
A few patterns are worth a second look rather than an automatic pass: a quote that won't specify fabric grade when asked directly, a total that's notably lower than others with no stated reason (often explained by a lighter fabric grade or minimal foundation once you ask), and no mention of warranty terms at all. None of these automatically means a vendor is untrustworthy — but a transparent vendor should be able to answer these questions clearly rather than deflect them. See our questions to ask before hiring guide for the broader vendor-evaluation conversation this feeds into.

Comparing Two Quotes Fairly
Rather than comparing bottom-line numbers alone, line them up against the same checklist:
| Check | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Fabric grade & GSM stated? | Directly affects durability and lifespan — see our fabric grade guide. |
| Foundation approach specified? | A minimal foundation can look cheaper upfront but may not suit your site's soil/span needs. |
| Installation scope defined? | Confirms what's included vs. what you'd need to arrange separately. |
| Warranty terms stated? | Confirms what's actually covered and for how long — see our warranty guide. |
| Exclusions listed explicitly? | Prevents surprise costs once the project is underway. |
